¡Hola todas! Soy Kate...y está vez escribo en Alaska. He estado muy ocupada este verano con muchas viajes a otras ciudades y me divertí mucho hablando con vosotros durante las ferias. Espero que les ayuden las materiales informáticas en su proceso de solicitud. Back in Anchorage!

Hi there! It's Kate and I'm back in Anchorage for a whole week! This fall has kept me very busy with out-of-state travel, but it has been a wonderful time! I've really enjoyed meeting and talking with all of you at the fairs. I hope the information and brochures you picked up at these events are helpful resources for you to use in your college search. Also, if you filled out an information card or had a scanner sheet, be looking for more UAA materials to arrive in the mail soon!

Midterms

Over the last few weeks on campus students have been taking their midterms. Although, not all classes require students to take tests for their midterm, for example you might have to do a presentation for a class instead. For the classes in which you do take a test it is essential to be prepared for your own success.

To survive the dreaded midterms it is best to know your own learning style and what techniques work best for you personally. For example, I like to make a ton of flashcards for almost all of my classes. In addition, I work better when I can discus the learning material, or when I can teach someone else what I have learned. Also, make sure you have NO distractions around while you are trying to study, since distractions are an easy way to procrastinate. It is also nice to have water/coffee/tea/food… etc. around to keep yourself boosted.

Overall, your first semester in college is a trial and error time to discover what study methods work best for you. If you do not do well on a test do not worry! Just try again until you know how you work when it comes to studying and test taking. It defiantly took me a semester before I settled into my own personal routine.

Mil gracias a todos los estudiantes que vinieron al feria de Oregon-Idaho en Ontario, Idaho el lunes. Y también a todos los estudiantes, padres, y consejos que vinieron al Feria Nacional de Boise ayer. ...From Idaho! Hey everyone, it's Kate and right now I'm in Boise! This Idaho trip has kept me very busy so far. Thanks to all the students who came to the Oregon-Idaho Border Fair in Ontario, Oregon on Monday and to the students, parents, and counselors who attended the Boise National College Fair yesterday. We had an amazing response at both fairs - you all had great questions and I really appreciate the time you took to talk to me and learn about the University of Alaska! I've got two more fairs during this trip in Idaho Falls and in Twin Falls. I've never been to either city, so I'm really looking forward to meeting you at the fair and to explore your cities a bit!

Soy Kate, y hoy te escribo de Salt Lake City, Utah. Acabo de llegar ayer después de cuatro días en New Mexico. Mil gracias a todos los estudiantes y los padres que vinieron al Albuquerque Convention Center el dia 11 y también a los que vinieron al Santa Fe Community College el dia 13. Tuve la oportunidad para explorar estas ciudades hermosas un poquito y me divertí mucho. Espero que puedo volver al próximo año.

Pues, ayer llegué en Salt Lake City y hoy estoy visitando Snow College en Ephraim, UT entre 10-2. Manana, visitaré Salt Lake Community College entre 10-2 en el Student Union del Redwood Campus. Y finalmente, el sábado estaré representando UAA durante la feria regional en Juan Diego High School en Draper, UT. Las horas de la feria están entre 1-3:30pm. ¡Nos vemos allí!

Hi there,
It's Kate again, and this time I'm writing to you from Salt Lake City! I just got up here yesterday after spending a few days at recruiting events in New Mexico. Thanks to everyone who came out of the Albuquerque Convention Center on Sunday the 11th and to the Santa Fe Community College fair on Tuesday the 13th! I had a wonderful time visiting both beautiful cities. The wonderfully sunny, 75 degree days weren't too bad either :)

So I arrived in Salt Lake City last night and today I'm visiting Snow College in Ephraim, UT until 2:00. Tomorow I'll be at the at Salt Lake Community College from 10-2 at their Student Center on the Redwood Campus. Then Saturday I'll be representing UAA during the college fair at Juan Diego High School from 1-3:30pm. Hope to see you at these upcoming events!!

UAA Fall Preview Day

Are you a high school student interested in attending UAA? Do you have questions about applying, scholarships, campus life, and academics? Then come to Fall Preview Day at UAA on Friday, October 23! This event is designed for high school students and their guests to get all their questions answered about attending UAA.

During Preview Day students will have the opportunity to attend a class, explore majors, learn about clubs and organizations, discover more about UAA's honors programs, and take a campus tour. Parents and guests will be able to attend workshops that address their questions and concerns.

¡Hola todos! Soy Kate y acabo de llegar en Minneapolis. Es una ciudad hermosa y estoy muy contenta con mi visita. Tengo un horario bien ocupado esta semana – 3 ciudades, 5 sesiones de ferias universitarias nacionales, y una feria nacional hispana en Milwaukee. Hi everyone! It's Kate and I've just arrived in Minneapolis - it's great to be here! I've got a busy schedule this upcoming week: 3 cities, 5 NACAC college fair sessions, and the Milwaukee National Hispanic College Fair! Tomorrow (9/30) morning is the start of these festivities - come by the Minneapolis Convention Center from 9am-12:30pm and from 4:30pm-8pm and on Thursday (10/1) from 9am-12:30pm. Alaskan Winters

As we are passing through the fall months winter is rapidly approaching, and for students who have never experienced an Alaskan winter it can be an exciting new experience. If you love winter sports and activities, or just want to see snow for the first time this is definitely the place for you! There are a few tricks though for those who find the long dark days and chilly atmosphere not as tolerable as other people who love this frozen state.

1. Wear lots of warm layers. Scarves mittens and hats are some good things to have for when you are outside. Outside may be frozen but inside can be toasty, so as I said wear layers.
2. Stay active people! Some Alaskans like to hibernate through the winter months but if you do this you will miss out on so much. Go ice skating, watch a hockey game, see a movie, go sledding, join a club, take up knitting and knit yourself a scarf to stay warm…. Okay, I could go on and on about activities to keep you from hibernating.
3. If the seasonal darkness concerns you the Student Health and Counseling center can provide you with a S.A.D light. More information at:

4. Some perks about the winter season: The Aurora Borealis, The Iditarod, Fur Rondy *An Alaskan Festival with events such as running of the reindeer,* Hot chocolate and gooey chocolate chip cookies, winters sports: snowboarding, skiing, sledding, ice hockey, ect.

High School Visits

Parking Tips!!

Hey, it is me Lindsay. Learning the ropes of the parking lots on campus can take a little while to get use to when first coming to school here. So, I will give you a few helpful hints about the parking situation.

I will admit that parking around campus can be less than fun at times, especially the first few weeks of school. As the semester goes on though the parking lots clear up because people stop going to class or drop their classes for example. *Side note: If you sign up for classes go!! It is your time and money you are wasting if you do not attend class.*

Tip # 1.) Arrive at the parking lot when people are getting out of class. If you do not do this you will just be circling around and probably not have too much luck. So, for example if your class starts at 2:30 arrive at 2:15 since there are 15 minutes between classes.

Tip#2.) Use the parking garages on campus. The one by the Social Science Building you can park top on the top floor for free or you can pay an extra fee to park any where in that garage. Also, by the Integrated Science Building there is a new parking garage for your use.

Tip#3.) The parking lot behind the Gordon Hartley Hall is always empty and it is not a further walk than it would be to park in another lot.

Tip#4.) With your student I.D. card you can ride the people mover bus for free. There is also an on campus shuttle that travels around campus, to and from the University Center, and aviation. If you want to avoid parking all together or if you are staying in the dorms and have no personal transportation definitely take advantage of those services for you as a student.

Aunque quiero que el verano no termine tan pronto, me gusta mucho las visitas en las escuelas secundarias, las ferias nacionales, y lo más importante – hablar con estudiantes, maestros, y padres sobre todo que ofrece esta Universidad.

Hi there! I’m Kate, an Outreach Specialist on the Recruitment Team here at UAA. As part of my job, I visit high schools all over the Alaska to talk to students, counselors, and parents about the process of going to college and the kinds of certificate and degree programs we offer at UAA. Now that school is back in session, I’m scheduling these visits. For those of you who live out of state and are interested in UAA, I may be coming to a city near you too! While it was a great summer up here in Alaska with warm temperatures…lots of 80 degree days here in Southcentral – even up to 90! The real live college student introduction...

Hey, my name is Lindsay and I have been attending UAA since the fall after graduating from a local high school in 2006. My first fall semester at the college I came in as an undeclared student, but by the time spring arrived I declared Nursing. I have not lived in the dorms, but would highly recommend it to any incoming freshman, or even to any one who is thinking about wanting to stay there. My favorite food on campus is in the Lucy Cuddy Center. There I like getting French fries with the secret sauce. I think by now they may have an actual name for it, but I still call it the secret sauce. Mmm, I want some right now just thinking about it. The best study area on campus is the very top floor of the library. They have plugs in for the laptop, big comfy chairs and awesome lighting/views from the windows. Alright, so that is just a small bit about me for now.

Upcoming Excitement:

Coming up this Saturday is Campus Kick Off. I have not been since I started my freshman year, but I am very excited to go this Saturday. I am most excited about going to the Butt Sketches!! Campus Kick Off also offers free BBQ to UAA students, a club and vendor fair, comedian, and other various activities. P.S. this is a great way to meet some fellow students.
